The biggest football rivalries in Turkey can be found in the big cities.
Istanbul hosts three of the most succesfull clubs in Turkish history. Besiktas, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are the biggest and most popular clubs in the country and the rivalries they have with each other are among the most fierce in Europe.
Maybe the most violent derby is played in the city of Izmir. Göztepe and Karsiyaka play in lower leagues now, but the derby still attracts very large crowds (imagine 80000 people attending a 2nd league match!). Derby matches involving the third club of the city (Altay) are also tensed.
The derby of Ankara should also be mentioned. Gençlerbirligi vs. Ankaragücü is the biggest derby in the capital of Turkey.
