The stadium was opened in 1947 as Estadio Chamartin was renamed in 1955 to Santiago Bernabeu (1895-1978) who was a player, coach and president of Real Madrid CF. The stadium was under construction many times as it had to be at least as big as Barca's Camp Nou.
