In Portugal the Lisbon derby between Sporting and Benfica is way
ahead of every other city derby, though the Porto derby (FC Porto - Boavista) has been increasing in importance in the last few years.
The big clubs with most history are Porto (Os Dragões - 'The Dragons'), Benfica (As Águias - 'The Eagles') and Sporting Lisbon (Os Leões - 'The Lions'). Boavista has a smaller history but now and then they compete with the Três Grandes ('The Big Three') for the title.
A smaller derby up North is played between Braga and Vitoria Guimaraes. |
