Following celtics formation in 1888, the two teams had quite a close relationship. They had the largest fanbase and by cooperating they made sure they got most of the profits from gate receipts etc. This continued for about 5 years until Rangers became the dominant force. From then on the relationship between the two clubs deteriorated at all levels. The Old Firm rivalry was born.
