When Karel Aalbers became chairman of Vitesse in the early nineties, he once said that in the province of Gelderland there should be only one professional football club. He also decided to build the Gelredome in the far south of the city so it would be easier for people from Nijmegen to come and support Vitesse.

Other : The second ground in the Netherlands (1st was Amsterdam ArenA) with a roof that can be closed. It's the first ground with a removable pitch. The pitch is placed in a bowl which can be moved out of the stadium. The stadium also hosted matches for the EURO 2000 tournament.
