Having spent most of the 20th century struggling for airtime against traditional North American sports, football has emerged has a serious player there in recent years.
More commonly called soccer on this side of the Atlantic Ocean, the sport has become hugely popular in North America since the turn of the century.
American Football, basketball and baseball still dominate the airwaves, but soccer now rivals ice hockey in terms of popularity with sports fans in North America.
Major League Soccer (MLS) has become a well-respected competition by attracting numerous star players from the biggest leagues in Europe.
MLS has also developed some fierce rivalries, which has further boosted its global profile. Read on as we look at some of the biggest football rivalries in North America.
Toronto FC v CF Montreal
If you love playing slots, you will understand how it feels to land the jackpot when you hit the right combinations. That ethos applies to these two Canadian clubs.
Much like Manchester and Liverpool in England, Toronto and Montreal have historically been cultural and economic rivals. There is no love lost between the two cities.
The long-standing ice hockey rivalry between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens is a perfect example of how each side of the equation can't get along.
Toronto's progression to the MLS Cup final at Montreal's expense in 2016 cranked up the bitterness in a rivalry which shows no signs of abating today.
Seattle Sounders vs Portland Timbers
The rivalry between the Sounders and Timbers dates back to their first meeting in the North American Soccer League (NASL) in May 1975.
They have subsequently crossed swords more than 100 times in multiple competitions and remain bitter enemies in MLS.
The animosity reached boiling point when Portland brought in Seattle forward Roger Levesque to play in a friendly against Toronto FC in 2007.
He was a reviled figure amongst the Timbers' fanbase and added further fuel to the fire after taunting them following an early goal in a US Open Cup match between the two sides in 2009.
LA Galaxy vs LAFC
LA Galaxy had built up a rich history in North American sport, winning the MLS title five times between 2002 and 2014. However, things have gone south in recent years.
LAFC's addition to the MLS ranks in 2018 did not help their cause, with the newcomers disrupting the established order in Los Angeles.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic's signing by LAFC was the trigger for an immediate rivalry between the two clubs and there has been no love lost between them since then.
The 'El Trafico' derby is always fiercely fought on the pitch, while the rival sets of fans make no secret of their total disdain for each other.
FC Dallas vs Houston Dynamo
Geographical proximity is generally a strong driver of football rivals and this is unquestionably the case where FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo are concerned.
Several violent incidents have ramped up the bitterness including a spat between Dallas striker Carlos Ruiz and Houston midfielder Ricardo Clark in 2007.
After aiming a deliberate kick at a prone Ruiz during a game, Clark was dismissed, received a nine-game suspension and was fined $10,000 - the most severe punishment in MLS history.
The incident was the catalyst for more altercations in subsequent meetings and helped to establish the rivalry as one of the fiercest in North American sports.
