 Great African derbies

When thinking about club football and the derbies that are played out, it can be very easy to think about those that take place in Europe or South America.

There are derbies that are synonymous with these two continents that have earned bigger reputations for what happens off the field, rather than sometimes because of what happens on the pitch. Rivalries between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce or Boca Juniors and River Plate can often be first thought of when it comes to the fans and how intense they can be.

However, Africa also has its fair share of incredible football derbies. They might not get as much recognition from global supporters as some of those in the biggest leagues do, but that doesn't mean they are any less fierce or competitive, something that bettors from the continent will have noticed when placing bets on the leagues where they are located.

The Betway sports betting South Africa platform is one place many African football fans continue to go to place bets when there are derbies taking place across the continent, as they understand that there can be value in these games in returns of the odds that are offered. Ask any African football fan, and they'll tell you the following derbies are among the greatest..

1. Cairo Derby
Perhaps the most famous of African derbies outside of the continent and known by football fans worldwide, the Cairo derby sees Zamalek and Al Ahly regularly compete against each other in the Egyptian Premier League, with both teams usually competing at the top of the table.

Al Ahly were champions for a record 43rd time last season, and look on course to win their 44th title this season. They also won their 11th CAF Champions League crown, making them one of the best clubs in Africa. However, the matches between them and Zamalek continue to catch the eye. The two sets of fans are extremely passionate about their clubs, which can lead to trouble in the stands. The violence that has been witnessed in the past has even seen this derby be played without them in attendance.

2. Soweto Derby
Matches between the Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs aren't just encounters against two of the biggest teams in South Africa, but between two teams in the Soweto region of the country. This is one of the premier games that many people use Betway to wager on in the nation, as it's a lot closer to home for them and something they know all about.

Known as the Soweto Derby, this match has been dominated by the Orlando Pirates in recent meetings, although records show that a draw has been the outcome on most occasions between the two teams throughout history.

3. Casablanca Derby
If you watch Moroccan football, then you'll have heard about the Casablanca Derby. It features the Raja Casablanca and Wydad Casablanca going head-to-head with each other, in games that have been very intense throughout its history, especially the very first iterations of the matches in the 1950s.

It has been so intense over the years that it's considered to be one of the most intense derbies in world football.
